Project for provision of treated water and
public electrification of the Pampanal community
The Pampanal community is located in the mangroves of the Cayapas Mataje Mangrove Ecological Reserve between San Lorenzo on the coast of Ecuador and Tumaco in Colombia.
The treated water system includes more than 700 meters of impulsion line with 9 wells, three pumps and an elevated tank of 8 cubic meters 10 meters high.
The main distribution line has around 2,500 meters of pipe.
The connection with individual keys to the 150 houses financed the OIM.

With the system, the 150 families now have access to more than 60 liters of water per day and person, with a daily total of 54,000 liters per day. The three pumps are working approximately 3.6 hours per day and have automatic control to alternately tap the different wells. The water microenterprise manages a hypochlorination system with which chlorine is produced at a low cost based on common salt.

The system does not require further maintenance, because it is fully automatic. A microenterprise was formed, managed by members of the community, which guarantees the services in the long term.

The project is co-executed by the Pampanal community, CODESO and FEDARPROBIM, the Afro-Artisanal Federation of Collectors of Bioaquatic Products of the Mangrove E.A. with headquarters in Limones, Esmeraldas Province, Ecuador, Telefax 593-6-789473, fedarprobim@yahoo.com.

The main financing provided the Project for the Development of the Indigenous and Black Peoples of Ecuador PRODEPINE RCN Telefax 593-6-727937, prodrcn@yahoo.com. It also supported the Illustrious Municipality of Limones, the Illustrious Municipality of San Lorenzo, the OIM and CODESO.
The black population of Pampanal lives mainly from the capture and commercialization of shell and artisanal fishing. The average monthly gross income for a family is around US$30.
It is important that the community has its own treated water and electrification system to have a better standard of living. Previously, an open well was used, from which water for human consumption had to be brought by canoe.

Initially, a solar system for pumping was planned, but it was possible to finance the "Interconnected with the public network" for the community.
